The great city of Teotihuacan

The City of Teotihuacan is situated roughly 50 km north-east of Mexico City. Built between the 1st and 7th centuries A.D., it is notable by the vast size of its ancient buildings. It truly is massive and is one of the first great cities of the Western Hemisphere. And its origins??? a complete mystery.

It was built before the arrival of the Aztecs in central Mexico but it was they who gave it the name Teotihuacan. Its covers 8 square miles (21 square kilometers) and supported a population of one hundred thousand.

The City contains a massive central road (the street of the dead) and the building including the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Moon but no military structures.

This mysterious city was made a World Heritage Site on 1987 and is the most visited archaeological site in Mexico.
